Timaukel https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/25/timaukel/ https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/25/timaukel/#respond Thu, 25 Jul 2024 16:05:36 +0000 https://rutasdelfuego.com/?p=1296 Timaukel is a commune in the southern region of Chile, located in the province of Tierra del Fuego, it is part of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region. The name “Timaukel” comes from the indigenous word Temáukel, which means “Supreme Maker” in the Selk’nam language, and refers to the main deity of said culture. The territory of Timaukel was inhabited since pre-Columbian times by the Selk’nam people, who used its grasslands as a hunting ground for guanacos. The Europeans arrived in the second half of the 19th century and they developed livestock farming. Timaukel covers an area of 12,850 km² and has a population of 405 inhabitants. Its capital is Villa Cameron, however, due to the growth of its population, it will be gradually moved to Pampa Guanaco, next to Lake Blanco, which goes into the pampas and passes through different “Sections” and sheep “Posts” of the old ranch. Near the Russfin Section is the gold dredge that was brought from England in 1904 and operated until 1910, which was declared a National Monument in 1976. Continuing towards the south are the facilities of the Río Grande Section – old ranches formed the current Estancia Cameron- and the ranches Onamonte, Vicuña, Río Chico, Las Flores and many more. The commune comprises a landscape that alternates the Magellanic pampa with primary lenga forests and mixed Magallanes lenga-coigüe forests and a significant population of guanacos lives. It also houses other ecosystems such as peat bogs, Andean areas, Patagonian steppe, scrublands, and coast, all representative of southern biodiversity, which have local and global importance for conservation. The old sawmills of Puerto Yartou, were founded in 1908. Río Cóndor, famous for its sport fishing and Puerto Arturo, a former logging factory owned by the Karukinka Natural Park. Following the lake area, where Lake Lynch, Lake Escondido, Lake Blanco and Lake Fagnano (Kami) stand out, where birds and guanacos live. Lake Fagnano ends in the mountainous area of the Darwin mountain range, full of vegetation, south of Seno Almirantazgo with numerous fjords, channels and glaciers, highlighting the summits of Mount Darwin and Mount Sarmiento and the Marinelli and Brookes glaciers. Amazing journey for nature lovers!

Porvenir https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/25/porvenir/ https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/25/porvenir/#respond Thu, 25 Jul 2024 12:50:24 +0000 https://rutasdelfuego.com/?p=1268 Porvenir town begins with the native population called Selknam (Ona), who inhabited the island in several around 4,000 aborigines. They were nomadic by nature, robust and skilled with the sling, arrow, and bow, living off the hunting of guanacos and birds. The discovery of Porvenir Bay was made in 1880 by Navy officer Jorge Porter, driven by the intense search for gold. Due to its geography and extreme climatic conditions on the island, the bay became a refuge for arriving ships, positioning Porvenir Bay as a centre for mining and livestock activities. The settlement of Porvenir began with the arrival of Croatian and Chilote immigrants. Porvenir town was founded on June 20, 1894, while the ‘Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego,’ a private Chilean company with over 1 million hectares between Chile and Argentina on the Island of Tierra del Fuego, was engaged in sheep farming and the export of meat. Over the years, in 1945, oil was discovered in Tierra del Fuego, and consequently, the current history of Porvenir town is also marked by the development of the oil industry. Despite all the growth, the town preserves its initial architecture, reflecting the various events that have occurred throughout the establishment of the town. It has become a beautiful historical town, almost frozen in time since its beginnings. From the discovery of Porvenir Bay to the settlement of Croatian and Chilote immigrants working in gold extraction to the boom in the livestock industry, all had a significant influence on its architectural style, surrounded by picturesque landscapes.

Tolhuin https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/20/tolhuin/ https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/20/tolhuin/#respond Sat, 20 Jul 2024 11:56:24 +0000 https://rutasdelfuego.com/?p=1174 Tolhuin town, is located on the eastern head of Fagnano Lake. It is a region of Andean Patagonian forest landscapes and lakes formed by glaciers. Tolhuin was founded on October 9, 1972. Tolhuin means ‘Like a heart’ in the Selk’nam language. Forestry is the main activity. At the entrance of Tolhuin are sculptures made of native wood, inspired by the Selk’nam culture, which represent the memory of the first inhabitants of Tolhuin. At the Civic Square, the Heroes of Malvinas Square, and local artisans on the way to the Khami Museum building, were inaugurated in December 2011. This building used to be the headquarters of the Tolhuin Police Station. It was built in 1922 by the farm owner called “Arroyo”, Mr. Antonio Livacic. A short distance away, the views of ‘Khami Lake’ also known as Fagnano Lake have breathtaking views of the heart of the Island.

Fagnano Lake, also known as Lake Khami, was formed by glacial activity during the last Ice Age. Glaciers sculpted the landscape, creating deep valleys that later filled with water as the glaciers retreated. The lake’s formation is a testament to the powerful force of glaciation, and tectonic plates have shaped the habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Fagnano Lake is one of the largest lakes in Tierra del Fuego, with clear waters, surrounded by forests and mountains, it is part of an unexplored nature.

Rio Grande https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/19/rio-grande-2/ https://rutasdelfuego.com/2024/07/19/rio-grande-2/#respond Fri, 19 Jul 2024 17:52:01 +0000 https://rutasdelfuego.com/?p=1130 The first formal establishment in the current jurisdiction of Río Grande corresponds to the Salesian Mission “Our Lady of Candelaria,” founded in 1893. In the following years, a police detachment and various commercial establishments were set up alongside the development of livestock farming in the area. Following this initial urbanization, on July 11, 1921, Hipólito Yrigoyen decreed the official founding of the Agricultural and Pastoral Colony of Río Grande. This name was eventually adopted due to the popularity of the river running through it.

The second chapter is marked by the discovery of oil, which began in 1949 and witnessed a strong influx of immigrants, bringing about significant changes in all aspects until 1973. The third chapter begins with establishing Law 19640 in 1973, continuing to the present day. This law led to the establishment of more than two hundred factories, dividing economic activity into three areas: electronics, plastics, and textiles. These new sources of employment generated the third significant wave of immigration, which undoubtedly led to the largest population growth.
